Thank You Mr. Buffett...but Can You Answer This for Us?
Berkshire Hathaway has their annual meeting today, and if I had an open mic in front of all those shareholders I would ask Warren Buffett the following question:
Thank you for taking may question Mr. Buffett.
For years you have told us two very significant beliefs that you hold to be true to your heart and yet they seem to contradict each other. The first is that you loved and admired your father, Congressman Howard Buffett. Throughout your biography you speak of his wisdom and admiration of his beliefs and conviction for doing what is Right for our country. The second is your position on Gold. You have called it a lazy, worthless asset that has no place in an investors portfolio and have said that the only value in gold lies in our stubborn willingness to protect its value.
Mr. Buffett - Let me recite for you what your father, the man you respected more than anyone in the world, said about the value of gold on the floor of the US Congress in 1948:
"I warn you that politicians of both parties will oppose the restoration of gold, although they may outwardly seemingly favor it. Also those elements here and abroad who are getting rich from the continued American inflation will oppose a return to sound money. You must be prepared to meet their opposition intelligently and vigorously. They have had 15 years of unbroken victory."
"But, unless you are willing to surrender your children and your country to galloping inflation, war and slavery, then this cause demands your support. For if human liberty is to survive in America, we must win the battle to restore honest money."
"There is no more important challenge facing us than this issue -- the restoration of your freedom to secure gold in exchange for the fruits of your labors." (Congressman Howard Buffett 1948)
